Learning Differences

Learning Difficulties – 20 to 25% of students experience difficulties learning academic skills and sometimes this is due to a Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) experienced by 4-5% of students. Students experiencing an SLD experience difficulties in one or more academic areas, relative to their overall cognitive capacity.

  • An SLD with impairment in reading (formerly Dyslexia).
  • An SLD with impairment in written expression (formerly Dysgraphia).
  • An SLD with impairment in mathematics (formerly Dyscalculia).

Intellectual Development Disorder – compared to individuals of the same age, significantly reduced cognitive capacity exists that results in impaired learning and everyday functioning.

Giftedness – compared to individuals of the same age, significantly higher levels of cognitive capacity exist that typically result in intellectual strengths and academic giftedness.
